Does your child speak at 1 year of age?
Appropriate Auditory, visual, tactile stimulation development
in infancy will facilitate first meaningful
word eg. mama/ baba at the age of 1 year. First You can wait upto 1yr 3mths or else guidance from speech language therapist is recommended.Delay in speech language milestones could be due to hearing loss, mental retardation, minimal brain damage, absent or delayed birth cry,cerebral palsy, autism, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, emotional deprivation, visual impairement or lack of speech language stimulation. Hence guidance from speech language Pathologist will help in speech and language development thereby reducing further social, emotional , learning problems.
Research reveals that child with lack of auditory, visual
& tactile stimulation during early infancy will affect speech &
language development .Children should be exposed to outdoor activities such as waterplay, sand play, garden play,
playing with peer group during childhood. This will enhance social & emotional development and reduce behavioural problems. It has been proved that children with lack of outdoor activity do have articulation problem with further reading writing problem even with no significant prenatal, perinatal & postnatal history.
Is your child exposed to more than one language?
An infant at home should always be exposed to one language initially for language milestones to occur. Later as children get exposed to their peergroups they learn other languages . Nowadays children use marathi, hindi, English, Gujrathi even at early ages as they start going to playgroup. A child does not get a language disorder from learning a second language. It won’t confuse your child to speak more than one language in the home. Speak to your child in the language that you know best. Children with language disorders will have problems with both language hence introduce one language first.
